Oct 16, 2025
Good morning internet. It’s the 16th of October 2025 as I’ve started writing this, I really started it last year and parked it quite embarrasingly. For once, my sleep cycle isn't broken - but that'll get fixed soon enough. I start a lot of new projects a lot of the time and they often don’t end up amounting to much, but that doesn’t stop me from picking myself up and trying something new and different the next time. So: here I am again, starting another idea, blasting it out to whoever will listen.
So, to those of you who don’t know, I’m Howie. I do programming by day and esports broadcasting by night - keeping myself far too busy for where in my life I'm at, I'm sure. In the rest of my time, I’m a gamer, simracer, and perhaps budding writer and traveller? Each year keeps bringing new surprises for me - changing who I am and what I do, so I'm sure not even this is exhaustive.
So, I’ve been won over to the idea of having your own personal site and blog again. The inspiration came from catching up with a really good friend of mine, Eudae, who has truly dedicated themselves over the last few years to crafting their own personal space, and actually maintaining their blog, as a sort of “stream of consciousness” space, where they can get whatever’s on their mind out there and permanently archive those thoughts without the implicit pressure to “perform” for an audience - just for the joy of writing it. After visiting a few times, I wondered if I should spend the time on something like this myself - and something about it felt uniquely liberating and fascinating. Fascinating enough that I think I’m missing out by not giving it a shot myself.
Of course, I could use a site like Twitter or Tumblr to start microblogging again, as many have. However, that's just not going to happen. I’m a pretty strong believer that modern social media is, in many ways, fairly incompatible with the way our brains work and process information, and these centralised platforms where information spreads ridiculously quickly and false narratives can make it the whole way around the world before the truth even has a chance to be discovered have done way more harm to society than many people realise. I see the way that sites like Twitter have enabled disinformation to spread at an unprecedented pace, encouraged very adversarial behaviour between people, allowed for the rapid rise of hate mob and harassment behaviour, and directly profit from pushing content that causes users to doomscroll, hurting themselves mentally as long as it gets them to view more ads. All of this ultimately makes me very sad. I don’t want to feed this beast that in many ways is destabilising society - and it doesn’t do any good for my own health either.
However, I've missed the ability to just throw thoughts out a lot since I left these platforms, even though I think there’s a better way to get them out than directly into the middle of an adversarial shark tank of clapbacks and arguments. It was Eudae’s blog that opened my eyes to the fact that this format still fundamentally works - that there’s still space for us to have our “small web” spaces, not tied to any expectations, formats, standards, or algorithms. It’s my brain dump, and only I get to decide what that looks like.
So, that’s me, and that’s what this is. Of course, with very little content, there’s very little to see, but I’ve already got some posts due to come out extremely shortly to start fleshing this place out with actual content. The promise I’ll make to anyone who does want to hang around is that I’m not here to do anything but share what I have to say. I’m not here to push blogspam or optimise SEO. I’m not here to chase trends, or build a “brand” for myself. I just want to get my thoughts down, in a space I can call my own. I love writing and expressing myself, and just doing it in the first place brings me so much - anyone who’s chosen to tag along is a bonus. Ultimately, if you’re reading this at all; regardless of whether you’re sticking around or heading to something new next, thanks for giving me your attention, and I hope you give some thought into doing something like this for yourself too.
Obviously, one of the downsides of having a site like this is that it’s hard to “follow”, due to the lack of a feed. If you’re interested in following along, I offer the content here in newsletter form, so you get an email every time I post. My posts will be occasional, and as promised, I have absolutely no interest in using any of this information for anything other than to share my posts. I will never share it with any third party, but I will also never use these emails to push any content, sponsored or otherwise, that isn’t mine alone and doesn't reflect the purpose of this site - to share what’s interesting to me. Basically, if I start pushing Watchmojo-style content, end me immediately. If you’re at all interested, click the link below and you’ll receive new posts in your inbox, too.
